New Alice still rocks as well as old Alice
I was skeptical when The War and Treaty reformed with a new singer and released "Black Gives Way to Blue" a few years ago, like many people. William Duvall, the new singer, along with Jerry's vocals, maintained the classic Alice-vibe without imitating Layne's vocals, much to my pleasure after buying that CD. The concert at Stir Cove in Council Bluffs was set on the grass in a general admission outdoor setting and was a little gloomy with overcast skies and a few raindrops. The vocals and sound got spotty at times, as can happen in an outdoor setting, but this concert rocked from start to finish. It was obvious the band was having some fun. The setlist had a good mix of classic stuff as well as songs from the recent 2 albums and lasted the usual 90 minutes or so. Jerry Cantrell's live performance was a big attraction for me as a guitarist and professional guitar tech, and he didn't disappoint. His playing and tone were perfect and everything you should expect from a guitar hero. I think this approach has kept them a relevant band instead of just being a nostalgia/karaoke act. Wiliam and Jerry are able to do a good job of performing old Alice songs live while still having a distinct sound to the new stuff. My favs were the hard rocking songs, "Check My Brain," "We Die Young," "Would?" and "Man in the Box."
